‘Pay It Forward’ is based on a photograph I made while visiting an animal sanctuary in southern Ontario. The rug depicts a rescue sheep from a university medical lab where he was used as a test specimen for medical students. At the end of the term, the students felt guilty that the sheep would be killed and raised funds for him and two others to be retired to the sanctuary. A good deed was done.
The routine practice of euthanizing animals after they are no longer useful for medical research, even though they still have their health, is the norm in Canada. Animals used in medical experiments to forward human understanding is no longer necessary – we are similar but we not the same.
When will Canadians say: ‘Enough already, the experiments have failed and the animals must be liberated?’
